ILLINOIS — An investigation is underway after an 81-year-old woman was found dead inside a home in Vernon Hills on Friday, according to police.
The Vernon Hills Police Department said officers responded to the 500 block of Saddlebrook Lane for a well-being check.
When officers arrived, they learned someone had died inside the home. Police briefly made contact with a man inside, but authorities said he stopped communicating and barricaded himself inside the residence.
Officials called in SWAT teams from the Illinois State Police and the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System to contain the situation.
Officers later entered the home and located the decomposing body of the 81-year-old woman.
Authorities said the woman’s 50-year-old son remained barricaded for several hours before being taken into custody by SWAT officers. He was later turned over to Vernon Hills police and transported to a hospital for evaluation. Officials said he appeared to be uninjured.
The woman has not yet been identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office, and her cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
Police said no criminal charges had been filed as of Friday.
The investigation remains ongoing.
