TEXAS — A routine traffic stop in Zavala County led to the discovery of more than $1 million worth of suspected methamphetamine, according to authorities.
Deputies said the stop occurred March 22 on Highway 57 after a driver was pulled over for traffic and equipment violations.
During the investigation, a deputy noticed suspicious modifications near the vehicle’s radiator and requested assistance from a Texas Department of Public Safety K-9 unit.
The K-9 alerted to the front of the vehicle, which led deputies to a large package hidden behind the radiator.
Authorities said the package contained approximately 18.44 kilograms — more than 40 pounds — of suspected methamphetamine with an estimated street value exceeding $1.4 million.
The driver was arrested and taken to the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies also reported that three children were inside the vehicle at the time of the stop. Officials said the children were safely removed and cared for during the investigation.
The case remains under investigation with Homeland Security.
