NORTH CAROLINA — Students and staff were evacuated from Weddington High School on Thursday morning after a threat was reported, according to district officials.

Officials with Union County Public Schools said the school was not placed on lockdown. Instead, students and staff were moved to the school’s football stadium while law enforcement officers worked to investigate the threat and secure the building.

Authorities said the situation began Thursday morning, and as of shortly after 9 a.m., the investigation was still ongoing.

Parents had reported concerns about a possible lockdown, but school officials clarified that the evacuation was precautionary to allow a safe and thorough investigation.

No additional details about the nature of the threat have been released.

Officials said law enforcement will continue working to ensure the campus is safe.
