
ALABAMA — A correctional officer in Jefferson County has been arrested on drug and contraband charges, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Officials said Markia Smith, who worked at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, was taken into custody Tuesday following a narcotics investigation.
Authorities reported that Smith was charged with possession of marijuana and first-degree promoting prison contraband. Investigators said approximately 134 grams of marijuana was found.
Smith was arrested at her home and transported to the Jefferson County Jail.
The Alabama Department of Corrections said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be possible.
