INDIANA — A 62-year-old Kokomo woman has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after police say she stabbed a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier and caused two crashes while fleeing the scene.
According to the Kokomo Police Department, the incident began around 6:12 p.m. Tuesday in a neighborhood near Main and Madison streets.
When officers arrived, they found a female letter carrier suffering from multiple stab wounds. Witnesses provided a description of the suspect and her vehicle, which police later identified as Laura Fortson driving a 2004 tan Buick.
Authorities said Fortson fled the scene following the stabbing and was involved in two separate personal injury crashes during her attempt to escape. Her vehicle was eventually disabled after the second crash on Ohio Street.
Fortson was taken into custody and later admitted to detectives that she attacked the letter carrier, according to police.
She is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness, intimidation with a deadly weapon, and possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
Police said additional charges related to the crashes are expected.
The investigation remains ongoing.
