SOUTH CAROLINA — A man has been arrested following a drug investigation in a North Charleston neighborhood, according to police.
Authorities said 31-year-old Brandon Derrick Brown was taken into custody Friday in the Chicora-Cherokee community.
Brown is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, marijuana and cocaine base, as well as possession of contraband in a secure facility.
According to investigators, officers with the North Charleston Police Department’s Gang Intervention Team and agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Gang Unit had been monitoring the Chicora Arms Apartments after receiving complaints about drug activity.
Officials said officers observed Brown engaging in several hand-to-hand transactions and retrieving drugs from a trash can before distributing them in the area between Florida Avenue and Spruill Avenue.
When officers detained Brown and others nearby, they reportedly found two foil-wrapped packages on the ground containing more than 108 grams of marijuana, over six grams of cocaine and more than five grams of cocaine base.
Authorities said an additional contraband charge was filed after more than two grams of cocaine base was discovered during a strip search at the jail.
Brown was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center and later released after posting a $75,000 bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
