Two people dead after high-speed chase ends in crash in Texas

TEXAS — Two people are dead after a high-speed chase ended in a crash early Sunday morning on the city’s far West Side, according to authorities.

The incident began around 4 a.m. when a caller reported two men driving through a neighborhood in an older model Toyota, checking door handles and breaking into vehicles. Surveillance video reportedly showed the suspects entering driveways and targeting parked cars.

A deputy later spotted a vehicle matching that description near the intersection of Blacktail Crest and Bonita Bend. When the deputy attempted to make contact, the driver fled at a high rate of speed.

Another deputy soon observed the same vehicle traveling without lights near Culebra Road. A short time later, the vehicle crashed.

Authorities said both occupants of the Toyota were found critically injured and were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators noted the individuals were wearing gloves, consistent with the reported vehicle burglaries.

Officials said the vehicle may have been stolen. Items found inside are being examined to determine whether they were used in or taken during the break-ins.

Deputies are canvassing nearby neighborhoods and have already identified multiple vehicles that were burglarized overnight.

One deputy involved in attempting to follow the vehicle has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in cases involving a death.

The investigation remains ongoing.
