TEXAS — A man has been arrested following an investigation into narcotics being smuggled into the James V. Allred Unit, according to the Wichita Falls Police Department.
Authorities said the investigation was conducted jointly with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and focused on Kevin Humphrey, who is suspected of supplying drugs intended to be brought into the prison. Officials noted the investigation comes after multiple overdoses and deaths linked to narcotics at the facility in recent months.
On March 19, the Wichita Falls Special Operations Unit carried out an undercover operation that led to the recovery of paper laced with K2, a synthetic cannabinoid, which investigators said was intended for smuggling into the prison.
Based on the findings, the OIG obtained an arrest warrant for Humphrey on a charge of manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 2 or 2A.
Authorities also executed a search warrant at Humphrey’s residence in the 5000 block of Cy Young Drive. During the search, investigators recovered 451 grams of K2, 345 grams of synthetic opioids, 11 grams of marijuana, and two pistols.
Humphrey, who is currently on parole from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, was booked into the Wichita County Law Enforcement Center. He remains in custody on a $50,000 bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
