Schools in Ohio could close Friday

OHIO — A developing threat of strong to severe thunderstorms on Friday could lead to school delays or closures in parts of Ohio.

According to the National Weather Service, forecasters have placed much of Ohio within a “marginal risk” area for severe weather, with the greatest potential expected late Friday afternoon into the evening. The risk zone includes several major population centers, including Columbus, Cincinnati and areas of northeast Ohio.

Meteorologists say a cold front moving through the region could trigger storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail.

While the overall threat remains limited, officials note that even isolated severe storms could create hazardous conditions, particularly during afternoon dismissal times.

A brief tornado cannot be ruled out, though forecasters say that risk remains conditional and dependent on how much moisture develops ahead of the storm system.

Because of the timing, some school districts may consider early dismissals, remote learning days or full closures to avoid transporting students during potentially dangerous weather conditions. District officials typically make such decisions based on updated forecasts and local conditions.

The uncertainty surrounding storm development remains a key factor, as forecasters say the severity of the system will depend on how much instability builds throughout the day Friday.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and school district announcements for any schedule changes as the weather system approaches.
