NORTH CAROLINA — A man from Pitt County is facing serious drug charges after a traffic stop in Lenoir County led to the discovery of methamphetamine, according to deputies.

Authorities say the incident happened on March 17 during proactive patrols in the Grifton Hugo Road area. Deputies stopped a white Ford Focus because of a non-functioning headlight.

The driver was identified as Richard Barnes, 57, of Grifton.

  • A K-9 unit conducted an open-air sniff and alerted to possible drugs
  • Deputies searched the vehicle
  • About 116 grams of methamphetamine was found in the trunk

Barnes was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lenoir County Jail.

He is now charged with:

  • Two counts of trafficking methamphetamine

Officials also said he was denied bond because he was already on pretrial release for other charges at the time of his arrest.

The investigation is ongoing.
