VIRGINIA — A 64-year-old woman was killed Monday evening in a single-vehicle crash during severe weather conditions, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash occurred around 8:06 p.m. on March 16 along Constitution Road, just north of Slate River Mill Road.
Investigators say a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox traveling southbound encountered hazardous roadway conditions caused by severe weather. The vehicle struck the upper branches of a downed tree that was partially blocking the road.
The driver, identified as Demita Joann Jackson of Dillwyn, then lost control of the vehicle. The SUV ran off the right side of the road and collided with another tree amid low visibility and adverse conditions.
Jackson, who was the only person in the vehicle, died at the scene from her injuries. Police said she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
