TEXAS — A police chase ended in a fatal crash Tuesday afternoon, shutting down a major highway in the Bacliff area, authorities said.
The crash occurred on State Highway 146 near FM 646 and involved at least three vehicles, including a sedan that was being pursued by police, an SUV that overturned and an industrial truck pulling a trailer.
Officials said the truck caught fire following the collision.
Emergency crews initially requested multiple ambulances and a medical helicopter, but the helicopter was later called off after a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
As a result of the crash, State Highway 146 was closed in both directions between FM 646 and State Highway 96. Authorities said the closure is expected to remain in place into the night, and drivers are advised to use Highway 3 as an alternate route.
Because the incident resulted in a fatality, the investigation has been turned over to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have not released details about what led to the chase or how fast the vehicles were traveling. The investigation remains ongoing.
