INDIANA — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for several counties in northern Indiana as lake-effect snow and strong winds move into the region.
The advisory remains in effect from 8 a.m. Monday until 11 a.m. Tuesday for Elkhart, LaGrange, northern LaPorte and St. Joseph counties, including South Bend, Elkhart, LaGrange and surrounding communities.

Forecasters expect lake-effect snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph.
Meteorologists say the combination of snowfall and gusty northwest winds could produce rapidly deteriorating travel conditions, with visibility occasionally dropping near zero in heavier snow bands.
The hazardous conditions are expected to impact the Monday evening commute, and drivers may encounter snow-covered and slippery roads across the advisory area.
Officials say lake-effect snow can vary widely across short distances, meaning some locations may experience heavy snow while areas just a few miles away see little accumulation.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling, and to be prepared for quick changes in weather, visibility and road conditions throughout the advisory period.
