SOUTH CAROLINA — A North Charleston man has been arrested and charged with multiple drug offenses following an investigation by the North Charleston Police Department.
Wakeen V. Lewis, 36, of North Charleston, faces charges including possession of cocaine base, trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
According to police, detectives began investigating an incident on March 6 in the 2100 block of Cosgrove Avenue in the Chicora-Cherokee community. Surveillance cameras reportedly showed a man running from a crime scene with a backpack. The man was later identified as Lewis.
Authorities said Lewis was also seen fleeing another location on Cosgrove Avenue after shots were fired. When he later appeared on camera again, the backpack was no longer with him.
Detectives later located the backpack in a nearby trash can. Inside, officers found 805 grams of green plant material that tested presumptively as marijuana, 103 grams of white powder that tested presumptively as cocaine, 8 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine base and 24 grams of mushrooms that tested presumptively as psilocybin.
On Friday, officers located Lewis in the 4300 block of Ladson Road after receiving information that he was staying at an apartment complex in the area.
Lewis was taken into custody and transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
