ILLINOIS — A 17-year-old was hospitalized after an early-morning shooting Saturday in Urbana, according to local police.

Officers with the Urbana Police Department responded to reports of gunfire around 12:45 a.m. on March 14 in the 800 block of East Kerr Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing 15 to 20 gunshots, prompting multiple calls to dispatch.

When officers arrived, they discovered evidence of a shooting at the scene. Police recovered several shell casings and observed damage to multiple vehicles and an apartment building, which investigators believe were struck during the incident.

Shortly after police arrived, a 17-year-old male from Champaign arrived at Carle Hospital with a gunshot wound believed to be connected to the shooting. Authorities said the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he received medical treatment.

Preliminary witness accounts indicate that a dark gray SUV was seen leaving the apartment complex at a high rate of speed shortly after the shooting occurred.

Urbana police are asking residents in the area to review home surveillance or doorbell camera footage recorded around the time of the incident. Detectives are particularly interested in identifying any vehicles or suspicious activity that may be connected to the case.

Investigators are also working to determine why the victim was in the area at the time of the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no suspects have been identified. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Urbana Police Department or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.

Authorities say tips leading to arrests in serious crimes may qualify for cash rewards.
