FLORIDA — Authorities removed 22 people from a suspected drug house early Thursday morning after responding to reports of drug activity at a residence in New Smyrna Beach, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived at a home on Mission Drive shortly after 6 a.m. following complaints from nearby residents about suspected methamphetamine sales and drug use at the property. Investigators discovered that numerous individuals were living inside the home as well as in tents set up throughout the backyard.

During the search, law enforcement officers found small amounts of methamphetamine, fentanyl, cannabis and various drug paraphernalia. Officials said several of the individuals present had previously been connected to other drug investigations and search warrants.

Out of the 22 people removed from the property, nine were arrested on outstanding warrants and drug-related charges. Authorities said their initial focus had been locating several primary suspects connected to prior drug investigations.

Investigators described the living conditions at the residence as extremely unsanitary and dangerous. Officials reported that the ceiling inside the home was collapsing in places, electrical wiring was exposed, and standing water was found throughout parts of the structure. The building also lacked running water and did not have a proper electrical panel.

Due to the conditions, several agencies responded to the scene, including city code enforcement officers, a building inspector, a fire inspector, animal control and the local utility commission.

After evaluating the property, building inspectors condemned the residence and scheduled a hearing to determine the structure’s future. Authorities said the home was not suitable for human habitation and posed significant safety risks to anyone living there.
