NORTH CAROLINA — Two people have been charged with felony animal cruelty after deputies found two severely underweight dogs abandoned inside a home, according to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Animal Enforcement officers responded Feb. 26 to a call requesting a welfare check on two dogs that were believed to have been left alone in a house for about two weeks. When officers arrived, they saw the dogs looking out the front window.

Authorities said both animals appeared severely underweight, with their ribs, backbone and hips clearly visible.

The dogs were removed from the home and taken to Henderson County Animal Services for evaluation and treatment.

During the investigation, deputies determined the people who had been living in the house had moved out and left the animals behind.

Investigators later charged 26-year-old William Sanders and 24-year-old Pamela Lopez with felony animal cruelty. Both were arrested without incident and taken to the Henderson County Detention Center.

Officials said the dogs have since gained about 10 pounds during their first week in care and are receiving proper nutrition, medical treatment and attention.
