NORTH CAROLINA — A 71-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after authorities said he led officers on a vehicle chase through Aberdeen while they attempted to serve a warrant.

According to the Aberdeen Police Department, officers went to the home of Joseph David Cheeks to serve a warrant. Officers were allowed inside the home but did not initially find Cheeks.

Police later located Cheeks in his vehicle. When officers asked him to get out, he refused and drove away, prompting a pursuit involving officers and a deputy with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Cheeks committed several traffic violations during the chase and at one point swerved his vehicle toward a Moore County deputy assisting in the pursuit.

The chase ended when Cheeks turned onto a dead-end road near Providence Place, where officers took him into custody.

Cheeks was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, and several misdemeanor and traffic violations. He was also served with an unrelated warrant for communicating threats and misdemeanor assault on a female.

Cheeks remained in jail Tuesday night under no bond.
