OHIO — A 24-year-old man was arrested Monday after authorities said he assaulted the mother of his child and drove away with their toddler, prompting an investigation by local deputies.

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the incident was reported at approximately 12:22 p.m. Monday in the 7100 block of Dayton-Springfield Road.

A woman called the Clark County Communication Center and told dispatchers that Zy’kel Adareen Strodes Edwards had assaulted her before leaving the scene with their child in his vehicle.

Deputies responded to the home to investigate. The woman told authorities she had been working for an extended period and asked Edwards to pick up their child from the apartment so she could rest.

Investigators said the two secured the child in a restraint seat in Edwards’ vehicle.

An argument then broke out, during which Edwards reportedly became aggressive. The woman told deputies he hit her in the face and attempted to throw her to the ground before driving away with the child still inside the car.

Detectives began preparing documentation for a possible AMBER Alert as they arrived at the scene. Authorities were able to contact Edwards by phone and convinced him to drop the child off at a relative’s home in Dayton.

Clark County detectives and Dayton police officers met at the address and confirmed the child was safe and unharmed. Because the child was located quickly and found to be secure, an AMBER Alert was not issued.

Following the investigation, Edwards was charged with domestic violence and unlawful restraint. He was booked into the Clark County Jail and is awaiting arraignment.
