
NORTH CAROLINA — A medical emergency shut down multiple lanes of Interstate 77 in southwest Charlotte on Monday morning, causing significant traffic delays near the Interstate 485 interchange.
Emergency crews responded to the area around 8:30 a.m., according to officials. Medic confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident.
Authorities closed several lanes of I-77 South while first responders investigated and worked to clear the roadway. All traffic was detoured onto Interstate 485 as crews remained on site.
The closure caused traffic to back up for miles in the area, and drivers were advised to find alternate routes to avoid heavy congestion.
Charlotte Fire and other emergency responders assisted at the scene.
Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the medical emergency. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
