TEXAS — Severe thunderstorms could develop across parts of Texas on Tuesday as a large storm system moves across the southern Plains, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.
In its Day 3 outlook issued Sunday evening, the Storm Prediction Center said scattered severe storms are expected to form from the southern Plains into the southern Great Lakes region.
Portions of central and northern Texas are included in the broader area where severe weather is possible, with thunderstorms expected to develop along and east of a dryline stretching across the southern Plains.
Forecasters say the developing storm system will be driven by a strong upper-level trough moving east from northern Mexico and the Southwest into the southern Plains. At the surface, a low-pressure system is expected to form over the central High Plains, while a dryline extends southward across the region before eventually being overtaken by a cold front.
East of these boundaries, warm and humid air will spread across Texas and surrounding states, creating conditions favorable for thunderstorm development. Meteorologists say the environment will feature strong wind shear and increasing atmospheric instability, which could support organized severe storms.
Storms that form along and east of the dryline could organize into clusters of thunderstorms and supercells capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes. As the system evolves, forecasters say the storms could grow into larger lines of thunderstorms, which may increase the threat for widespread damaging winds and tornadoes, particularly across parts of central Texas.
In addition, a separate corridor of severe weather potential may develop across north-central into southern Oklahoma, where semi-discrete supercells could also form and produce severe weather.
Forecasters note that while the overall setup favors scattered severe thunderstorms across the region, details regarding the exact timing and location of storms remain uncertain several days in advance. Residents across Texas are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as Tuesday approaches and be prepared for possible severe weather.
