NORTH CAROLINA — Two people were killed and two others were injured in a crash early Friday morning that shut down part of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County.
According to officials, the crash occurred around 5 a.m. on I-85 South between Exit 52 for Poplar Tent Road and the Concord Mills exit near Concord, North Carolina.
Emergency responders confirmed that two people died at the scene. Two others were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
Authorities said multiple vehicles may have been involved in the crash, including at least a tractor-trailer, a passenger car and an SUV. Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of vehicles involved or the cause of the collision.
The crash prompted the closure of the southbound lanes of I-85. State transportation officials estimated the highway could remain closed until after 10 a.m. as crews worked at the scene and cleared the wreckage.
Drivers were advised to take Exit 52 onto Poplar Tent Road, travel approximately two miles to George W. Liles Parkway, then continue to U.S. 29 before reconnecting with Interstate 85 via I-485.
The crash remains under investigation.
