FLORIDA — A driver was killed late Wednesday morning after a crash in Brevard County that ended with the vehicle catching fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 11:46 a.m. on March 5 near the intersection of North Wickham Road and Forest Lake Avenue.

Investigators said a 2024 Ford Escape was traveling westbound on North Wickham Road just west of Forest Lake Avenue when, for unknown reasons, the driver failed to maintain the travel lane and veered off the roadway to the right.

According to troopers, the SUV struck a traffic control sign and then a tree. After the collision, the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity. The Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office will confirm the driver’s identity once next of kin have been notified.
