Multiple power outages possible in Texas this week

TEXAS — Texas is on alert this week as a series of storm systems bring heavy rain, strong thunderstorms and gusty winds across much of the state — raising the possibility of power outages in some areas

According to meteorologists, rounds of rain and thunderstorms moving through Texas from Wednesday into the weekend will be driven by warm, moisture-rich air from the Gulf colliding with incoming storm systems.

This pattern is expected to produce heavy downpours, frequent lightning, damaging wind gusts and even hail, particularly in North, Central and parts of West Texas.

Heavy rain isn’t just a flooding concern. Repeated showers and thunderstorms can saturate soils and overwhelm drainage systems, leading to localized flooding and fast-rising creeks — conditions that often coincide with storm-driven power disruptions.

Storms capable of producing strong wind gusts and lightning are among the biggest causes of power outages during this type of active weather. Winds can bring down tree limbs onto power lines, while lightning strikes can directly damage electrical infrastructure.

With storms expected nearly every day through the weekend, utility providers could face increased outage reports and challenges restoring service during heavy storm activity.

In addition to heavy rain and wind, forecasters say severe thunderstorms with hail and intense wind gusts may impact parts of the state on Wednesday and Thursday, including the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond. Even where rain isn’t continuous, isolated severe cells can produce bursts of weather capable of knocking out power locally.

Texans are encouraged to stay weather-aware throughout the week, monitor local forecasts, and be prepared for temporary power interruptions, especially during peak storm periods. Simple preparedness steps like charging devices, keeping flashlights accessible, and securing loose outdoor objects can help reduce the inconvenience if outages occur.
