Measurable snowfall potential increasing for Virginia next week

VIRGINIA — A winter storm system expected to develop in early March could bring snow, ice and rain to parts of Virginia, according to national forecasters.

Meteorologists say a surge of Arctic air moving south from Canada will set the stage for the system early next week.

As warmer, moisture-rich air rides over the cold air in place, widespread snow, sleet and freezing rain may develop across portions of the Midwest and Northeast, with impacts extending into parts of the Mid-Atlantic, including Virginia, according to the National Weather Service.

AccuWeather has indicated that while the storm is not expected to be a “blockbuster,” plowable snow and some ice appear likely in parts of the region. Snow is currently forecast across portions of the Mid-Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, though exact totals and the storm’s track remain uncertain.

Before the main system arrives, lighter snow is expected to move through parts of the region late this week. The greater risk for travel disruptions in Virginia appears to be from Monday, March 2 through Wednesday, March 4, depending on how the storm develops.

Major travel hubs along the East Coast could see delays, and hazardous road conditions are possible where snow and ice accumulate. In areas that see more rain than snow, particularly in lower elevations, localized urban flooding cannot be ruled out.

Forecasters urge residents to monitor updated forecasts in the coming days, as changes in the storm’s track could significantly impact snow and ice totals across the state.
