NORTH CAROLINA — A Pleasant Hill man is facing felony drug and child abuse charges after deputies found him unconscious behind the wheel of a vehicle late Tuesday night.
According to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy M. Thomas and Sgt. A. Wood were on patrol shortly after 10 p.m. on Feb. 24, 2026, when they observed a vehicle stopped in the roadway on West Fifth Street near Monroe Street. The vehicle was not moving.
When deputies approached, they found 28-year-old Evan Paige Carroll unconscious in the driver’s seat with the vehicle still in drive. Deputies rendered aid and shifted the vehicle into park. Carroll later regained consciousness.
Authorities said a seven-month-old child was secured in a car seat in the backseat at the time of the incident.
During their investigation, deputies reported finding Carroll in possession of fentanyl. Halifax County EMS responded to the scene and evaluated both Carroll and the infant. The child was later released to a responsible family member.
Carroll was arrested and charged with felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and child abuse. He was booked into the Halifax County Detention Center under no bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 26, 2026.
The Halifax County Department of Social Services was notified, and a report has been filed.
