INDIANA — A 79-year-old Michigan man died Wednesday morning following a two-vehicle crash in northern Miami County, according to the Indiana State Police.
The crash was reported around 11 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 31 and State Road 16, about two miles west of the town of Denver, Indiana. The location is approximately a 90-minute drive north of downtown Indianapolis.
Police identified the man who died as Joseph Wilhelm, 79, of South Haven, Michigan.
Investigators believe a 2021 Lexus driven by Larry Durham, 88, of Rochester, Indiana, was traveling westbound on State Road 16 and attempted to cross U.S. 31 when it entered the direct path of Wilhelm’s southbound 2019 Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle. The two vehicles collided and came to rest in the southwest quadrant of the intersection.
A passenger in Wilhelm’s vehicle, Barbara Wilhelm, 78, was flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
Durham and his passenger, Virginia Durham, 85, were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Their injuries were also not considered life-threatening.
Police said alcohol and narcotics are not suspected to have contributed to the crash. The investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing.
