VIRGINIA — A 20-year-old man was arrested Monday night after police say he crashed a stolen vehicle into a Chesterfield County home, causing significant damage and a gas leak that forced nearby residents to evacuate.

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, officers spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen from the city of Richmond at about 10:40 p.m. on Feb. 23 along Midlothian Turnpike.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, activating their emergency lights and sirens, but the driver fled. Police said the driver sped away twice, and officers discontinued the pursuit on both occasions.

A short time later, officers located the vehicle near Pocoshock Boulevard and again in the 7600 block of Sandler Drive. Police said the driver then crashed the vehicle into a home, causing significant structural damage.

Chesterfield Fire and EMS responded to the scene and determined the crash had caused a gas leak, prompting an evacuation of the area.

The driver, identified by police as Isaac J. Ellison, 20, who is experiencing homelessness, fled the scene on foot but was taken into custody nearby. Authorities said no injuries were reported. Ellison was transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being taken to jail.

Ellison has been charged with two counts of felony eluding police, one count of misdemeanor eluding police, grand larceny and felony hit-and-run, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation.
