OHIO — A 33-year-old Zanesfield man was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly firing a gun during what he reported as an attempted theft at his property.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:41 a.m. Feb. 22 to a residence in the 8900 block of Township Road 177 on a report of an attempted camper theft.
The caller, identified as Jacob Field, told dispatchers he had been asleep inside his camper when someone tried to steal it. He also reported firing a shot at a vehicle he believed was involved. The vehicle was said to have left the area toward State Route 559.
Upon arrival, deputies observed fresh snowfall but reported finding no vehicle tire tracks on the roadway near the camper. Field was found pacing in the driveway and admitted to firing the shot.
Deputies temporarily secured multiple weapons from Field while they conducted their investigation. Field told deputies he believed multiple individuals were attempting to steal his camper. He said he heard a diesel truck and saw a vehicle without lights.
Field later stated he fired what he described as a “warning shot” from inside the camper through a broken window, aiming toward nearby trees to avoid hitting anyone.
Deputies located a spent shell casing inside the camper, along with gasoline containers and firearms. Additional weapons were recovered and secured for safekeeping.
Family members at the scene reviewed nearby security camera footage but did not observe clear evidence of suspicious activity.
Following the investigation, Field was taken into custody and transported to the Logan County Jail. He was charged with discharging a firearm across a roadway, a violation of Ohio Revised Code 2923.162(A)(3).
Authorities requested a mental health evaluation prior to any future release of the firearms. All weapons were logged into evidence.
The incident remains under review.
