LOUISIANA — A water main break on South Claiborne Avenue is forcing multiple school closures and delays across New Orleans on Monday, officials said.
The break has caused low water pressure and prompted a boil-water advisory in parts of the city. Crews are working to locate the exact source of the break, and officials have warned repairs could take several days.
St. George’s Episcopal School and Trinity School are operating on a two-hour delay, with classes beginning at 10 a.m.
Several schools are closed for the day, including all three campuses of The Willow School; Samuel J. Green Charter School; both the elementary and middle campuses of Benjamin Franklin Elementary/Middle Mathematics & Science School; the Uptown campuses of Audubon Charter School; KIPP Central City Primary and KIPP Central City Academy.
Also Mahalia Jackson Elementary School; ReNEW Early Childhood Program; ReNEW Laurel Elementary; Walter L. Cohen High School; Booker T. Washington High School; the Uptown campus of the International School of Louisiana; McMain Secondary School; Sophie B. Wright Charter School; and Leah Chase School.
The Orleans Parish Civil District Court at 421 Loyola Avenue is also closed due to low water pressure.
The boil-water advisory covers the area bounded by Carrollton Avenue from Interstate 10 (Pontchartrain Expressway) to the Mississippi River; I-10 from Carrollton Avenue to the Mississippi River; and the Mississippi River from Carrollton Avenue to the Pontchartrain Expressway.
Residents in the affected area are advised to use bottled or boiled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and cleaning food until further notice. Those with compromised immune systems are also urged to use safe water when washing hands, showering or bathing.
