One person dead after being found face-down in Florida river

FLORIDA — A 16-year-old boy was found unresponsive Saturday morning in the Indian River during a weekend camping and fishing trip with friends, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the teen as Hunter McKelvin of Paisley. Deputies said he was discovered face-down near an island in the river, which stretches more than 120 miles along Florida’s Atlantic Coast.

McKelvin’s friends began performing CPR after finding him and transported him by boat to a nearby park, where first responders took over life-saving efforts. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead at a hospital at 9:30 a.m.

Investigators said McKelvin had no obvious injuries, and at this time, his death does not appear to be suspicious. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23, to determine the cause of death.

The incident remains under investigation.
