MARYLAND — A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of central, northern and northeastern Maryland, with significant snowfall possible from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.
The National Weather Service office in Baltimore/Washington said heavy snow is possible in Frederick, Carroll, northern Baltimore, Cecil and southern Baltimore counties, as well as northwest Montgomery, northwest Howard, northwest Harford and southeast Harford counties.
Forecasters say total snow accumulations of 5 inches or more are possible across these areas. Snow may begin as early as Sunday morning, but the heaviest snowfall and coldest temperatures are expected late Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning. Travel conditions could become very difficult, especially Sunday night into the Monday morning commute.
In far western Maryland, including Garrett County, a separate Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon. Eastern and western portions of Garrett County could see 6 inches or more of snow, with higher elevations most likely to receive the greatest accumulations. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches and further impact travel.
Officials warn that road conditions could deteriorate quickly as snow intensifies Sunday evening. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for potentially hazardous travel conditions through Monday.
