KENTUCKY — A Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday morning for several counties in northeastern Kentucky as forecasters warn that heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding.
The National Weather Service in Charleston, West Virginia, said flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible in Boyd, Carter, Greenup and Lawrence counties. The watch comes as creeks and streams are already running high and could rise out of their banks if additional heavy rain develops.
Meteorologists say quick-hitting thunderstorms may produce between three-quarters of an inch and one inch of rain in a short period of time. Combined with elevated streamflows and ongoing runoff, this could result in flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, especially near small streams and creeks.
The watch is expected to remain in place through Friday morning. Officials urge residents in flood-prone locations to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to take action if Flood Warnings are issued.
Emergency managers advise avoiding flooded roadways and staying alert for rapidly changing conditions, particularly during periods of heavier rain.
