Multiple schools in Wisconsin could close Thursday

WISCONSIN — A Winter Weather Advisory and hazardous travel forecast for parts of Wisconsin could force school districts across the state to cancel classes or delay openings on Thursday as accumulating snow and deteriorating road conditions create risks for students and staff, weather officials said.

The National Weather Service has issued advisories for much of central, north-central and northeast Wisconsin, warning that snow and slick roads are likely from late Thursday into Friday. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches or more are possible in these areas, particularly north of Interstate 94, and travel could become hazardous as the storm moves in.

Meteorologists say the combination of falling snow, colder temperatures and breezy winds may lead to rapidly deteriorating road conditions by late Thursday afternoon and evening. Reduced visibility and snow-covered road surfaces can make bus routes and student drop-off zones unsafe, a situation that often leads local school officials to call off classes.

School districts in the state typically monitor these weather alerts closely and may announce closures or late starts if conditions are expected to create dangerous travel for buses and families. Prior winter weather advisories and snow events in the region have already prompted delays and closures in both Minnesota and Wisconsin earlier this winter.

In addition to accumulating snow, forecast models suggest that wet, heavy snow could affect travel and even impact power lines in some communities, another factor that can influence decisions on school operations.

Parents and students are advised to stay tuned to local school district communications and weather updates throughout Thursday in case of cancellations, delays or early dismissals.
