NORTH CAROLINA — Three people were killed and another was critically injured in a head-on crash early Saturday morning on N.C. Highway 87 in Harnett County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred near Broadway Road, prompting the North Carolina Department of Transportation to close both directions of NC-87 around 4:30 a.m. Troopers said a Toyota Camry was traveling on the highway when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Chevy Z71 pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup, identified as 28-year-old William T. Underwood, died at the scene. Investigators said Underwood was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Two of the three passengers inside the Camry also died as a result of the collision. The third passenger was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Troopers said all three occupants of the Camry were stationed at Fort Bragg. The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin through the military.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

NC-87 reopened around 7 a.m., according to transportation officials.
