VIRGINIA — A 1-year-old boy was killed and his mother was seriously injured Thursday afternoon in a pedestrian-involved crash in Lee County, according to the Virginia State Police.
Troopers said the incident occurred on Route 23 South at mile marker 25.4 in the Jasper area when the mother and child — identified as a 22-month-old boy — stepped into the southbound lanes after leaving a nearby residence.
A 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling south struck the pair. The child was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
The driver of the pickup was not injured in the collision.
Southbound Route 23 was closed for several hours during rescue operations and investigation, and traffic was briefly halted in both directions to allow medical flight access. The roadway has since reopened.
Charges are pending, and the crash remains under investigation by state police.
