Tennessee school district announces closure due to illness

TENNESSEE — Coffee County School District has announced it will close all schools Thursday and Friday due to a high number of students experiencing flu-like symptoms.

District officials said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution as the community has seen an increase in illness. All schools in the district will be closed to students on Thursday, Feb. 12, and Friday, Feb. 13.

Teacher in-service, which had previously been scheduled for Friday, will now take place on Thursday. Schools will be closed to both students and staff on Friday.

Students and staff were already scheduled to be out of school Monday, Feb. 16, in observance of Presidents Day. Students are expected to return to class on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

In a statement, the district said the extended break will allow time for rest and recovery while maintenance and custodial teams work to sanitize and disinfect classrooms and school facilities.

Officials encouraged families to help prevent the spread of illness by ensuring proper rest, staying hydrated, washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, and keeping students home if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
