Two people injured after crashing stolen vehicle in Indiana

INDIANA — Two people were injured — one critically — after a reportedly stolen vehicle crashed while fleeing police on Indianapolis’ north side Tuesday night, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. Feb. 10 near East 38th Street and Park Avenue, just west of North College Avenue.

Police said an IMPD officer ran the license plate of a vehicle near Binford Boulevard and Allisonville Road, and it came back as stolen. The officer followed the vehicle and activated emergency lights near 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway.

When the driver began to speed up, the officer turned off the emergency lights in accordance with department policy, which does not allow pursuits for stolen vehicles, police said.

The vehicle later crashed at 38th Street and Park Avenue, possibly rolling over multiple times.

Two male occupants were taken into custody at the scene. One of them had been trapped inside the vehicle and was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The second occupant was also injured.

Police said there may have been a third person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Investigators emphasized that no officers were actively pursuing the vehicle when it crashed.

The incident remains under investigation.
