NORTH CAROLINA — One person was killed Monday in a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a dump truck on U.S. 19, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said they were dispatched to the crash at approximately 11:38 a.m. near Fairmont Road after receiving reports of a trapped individual. Investigators said the passenger car was traveling west on U.S. 19 when it ran off the right side of the road, struck the end of a guardrail, and then overcorrected into the eastbound lanes.

Authorities said the dump truck struck the passenger vehicle on the passenger-side door. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s name has not been released as officials work to notify next of kin.

The dump truck driver was transported to Mission Hospital with minor injuries and was released after receiving treatment, according to highway patrol officials.

No charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.
