PENNSYLVANIA — At least one person was killed in an 18-vehicle crash Friday morning on Interstate 79 in Butler County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Police said both northbound and southbound lanes of I-79 are closed between mile markers 80 and 88, from the Zelienople exit to the Evans City exit. Bertha Cazy, a corporal with state police, said the crash was reported shortly after 10:20 a.m.
Investigators believe snowy and icy road conditions contributed to the crash.
Cazy said Interstate 79 is expected to remain closed for several hours while crews work at the scene. Traffic is being rerouted onto State Route 19, where motorists should also expect delays.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible and to use caution when traveling due to hazardous road conditions.
