Measurable snowfall possible in parts of Kentucky this weekend

KENTUCKY — A fresh round of winter weather is poised to affect much of Kentucky on Friday, bringing accumulating snow and continued cold that could disrupt travel and daily life, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service Jackson KY and regional forecast offices have highlighted the potential for snow developing Friday into Friday night across parts of the Commonwealth, particularly in eastern and central counties. Snow is expected to be most likely Friday afternoon into the evening, with lighter flakes possible at times earlier in the day.

Expected Snow and Timing:

  • Snow is forecast to begin Friday afternoon and continue into Friday night in many areas, with snow showers or squalls possible in eastern Kentucky counties.
  • While totals will vary, most areas can expect light accumulations of snow — generally around 1 inch or less — with isolated higher amounts possible where bands of heavier snow set up.
  • Temperatures will remain well below normal, limiting melting and increasing the likelihood that snow will stick to roads and sidewalks. Mixed precipitation (rain/snow) may occur in some regions before the bulk of the snow arrives.

Impacts and Conditions:

Travel conditions may become hazardous Friday afternoon and evening, particularly on untreated secondary roads and elevated surfaces. Snow falling on already cold pavement could lead to slick spots and reduced visibility during the afternoon and into the evening commute.

The Winter Weather Advisory and Hazardous Weather Outlook indicate that this system is part of a more active pattern following recent wintry storms that have already left lingering snowpack and ice on many roadways. Even relatively light new snow can create travel challenges when roads are not clear.

Cold Temperatures:

Daytime highs on Friday are expected to be chilly, with readings generally in the 20s to low 30s, keeping ground temperatures near or below freezing and contributing to persistent slick conditions. Nighttime lows will dip further into the teens or lower, with wind chills below zero in some areas on Saturday morning.
