New Kentucky bill would result in lower power bills

KENTUCKY — Two Kentucky state lawmakers have introduced legislation aimed at lowering electricity costs for residents in Eastern Kentucky who have faced high power bills during recent periods of extreme cold.

State Reps. Derek Lewis and Patrick Flannery filed House Bill 535, known as the Eastern Kentucky Energy Savings Act. The proposal is intended to improve affordability and reliability for families in the region who are struggling with rising energy costs.

According to Lewis, a key component of the bill is securitization, a financial tool he said could provide immediate relief to customers while helping ensure reliable electric service.

The legislation has been filed and is currently awaiting assignment to a committee for further consideration.

The bill comes amid broader concerns over electric rates in the state. Earlier this week, Russell Coleman called on the Kentucky Public Service Commission to reject any proposed rate increases for Kentucky Power, citing the financial strain high utility costs place on residents.
