FLORIDA — A Seabreeze High School paraprofessional was arrested Thursday after allegedly kicking a 17-year-old student with Down syndrome during a behavioral incident, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Police said the incident was reported to the Seabreeze High School assistant principal, who then notified the on-campus school resource officer. An investigation was launched following the report.

According to investigators, evidence showed that the paraprofessional, identified as 50-year-old Dontel Wright, intentionally kicked the student. Police said the student ran from Wright and attempted to hide under nearby bleachers. The report states that Wright followed the student and forcibly pulled the student out from underneath the bleachers.

Authorities said the student did not suffer any injuries as a result of the incident. The student’s parents were notified and have expressed their intent to press charges on behalf of their child.

Following the investigation, Wright was taken into custody by Daytona Beach police. Officials said the case remains an active criminal investigation and no additional details are being released at this time.
