Snowfall possible in North Carolina this week

NORTH CAROLINA — Forecasters say there is a chance of snow in parts of North Carolina from Wednesday into Thursday, but it is not a strong or widespread snow event and conditions vary across the state.

• Central and Eastern North Carolina

  • In areas such as the Raleigh region, the forecast shows a chance of rain and snow late Wednesday night into early Thursday. National Weather Service forecasts indicate this mix could occur as temperatures fall near or below freezing, especially overnight. Snow chances are modest, and any accumulation is expected to be light.

• Piedmont and Triad

  • Forecasts from the NWS in central parts of the state (such as near Greensboro and Charlotte) also show a chance of rain mixing with snow Wednesday night, with most precipitation likely remaining rain or mixed before changing over briefly to snow as temperatures dip. Snow amounts are expected to be minimal or light where snow does fall.

• Western and Mountain Regions

  • In western North Carolina around Asheville and the mountains, models show a chance of rain and snow before Thursday morning, but with little or no snow accumulation expected. Temperatures there will be colder, which can support snowflakes briefly, but the available moisture isn’t expected to produce significant snowfall.

Overall Context

  • The chance of mixed precipitation (rain/snow) typically increases as moisture moves in with a midweek system, but most of the state will see rain or rain mixing with snow rather than heavy snow showers
  • Where snow does occur, accumulations — if any — are expected to be small, generally a light dusting or a brief coating in limited areas.
  • Thursday is forecast to be mostly sunnier and colder after any nighttime snow chances.

In Summary

North Carolina faces a chance of snow late Wednesday into Thursday, with the highest likelihood in areas where temperatures dip near or below freezing overnight. The overall snow potential for most of the state during this period is low to modest, and any snowfall is expected to be light rather than significant.
