Virginia school closings and delays for Wednesday

VIRGINIA — Continued winter weather impacts from a significant snow and ice storm earlier in the week are prompting a mix of closures, delayed starts and remote learning days for many public school systems across Virginia on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Conditions on secondary roads, sidewalks and around school buildings remain a concern for transportation safety. 

Two-Hour Delays and Later Start

Chesterfield County Public Schools will open on a two-hour delay Wednesday. 

Colonial Heights Public Schools also plans a two-hour delayed start Wednesday. 

Fredericksburg Public Schools and Goochland County Schools are among those opening two hours late Wednesday. 

Fairfax County Public Schools will begin classes two hours later than usual Wednesday to allow for safer travel. 

Closures and Remote Days

Hanover County Schools will remain closed through Thursday with Wednesday designated as a remote learning day for students. 

Hopewell City Schools is closed Wednesday, with staff reporting later in the day, according to local announcements. 

Maggie Walker Governor’s School will conduct virtual classes only on Wednesday. 

Other Adjustments

Richmond Public SchoolsPrince Edward County SchoolsSpotsylvania County Schools and several other systems also plan to open two hours late Wednesday. 

Across much of the state, school officials continue to monitor weather forecasts and travel conditions. Many districts are using built-in snow days, asynchronous/remote learning options and delayed starts to balance instructional needs with safety considerations following the winter storm.
