NORTH CAROLINA — Severe winter weather that has affected large portions of North Carolina over the past week continues to disrupt school schedules across the state on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Multiple public school systems have announced closures, delayed starts, or remote learning plans due to hazardous road conditions from snow and ice.
Central and Piedmont Regions
• Wake County Public Schools will open on a two-hour delay Wednesday to address dangerous black ice and ensure safer travel conditions for buses and commuters.
Several systems in the Piedmont area will remain closed or switch to remote learning:
- Asheboro City Schools: Closed.
- Davidson County Schools: Closed.
- Davie County Schools: Closed.
- Mount Airy City Schools: Closed.
- Stokes County Schools: Closed.
- Surry County Schools: Closed.
- Randolph County School System: Remote learning day.
- Rockingham County Schools: Remote learning day.
- Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools: Remote learning day.
- Yadkin County Schools: Remote learning day.
Eastern North Carolina
Edgecombe County Public Schools has announced that all schools will be closed on Wednesday, and students and staff should not report to campuses due to ongoing weather impacts.
Other eastern districts previously reported remote learning schedules extending through this week as conditions improve.
Outer Banks / Dare County Adjustments
• Dare County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Wednesday for Cape Hatteras area students.
The decisions come as communities continue to recover from heavy snow, ice and dangerously cold conditions caused by recent winter storms. Travel remains treacherous in some secondary roads, prompting district officials to postpone or modify school schedules for safety reasons.
