ALABAMA — A death investigation is underway after a person was found dead inside a home in Somerville, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they responded to assist a Alabama Law Enforcement Agency state trooper who reported shots being fired into a residence in the 200 block of Shag Bark Trail. Authorities said the trooper had been following up on a traffic crash in which a person reportedly left the scene.
According to the sheriff’s office, when the trooper arrived at the home, the individual ran inside and later fired a shot. The trooper maintained a secure position until additional law enforcement arrived.
The sheriff’s office said the person was later located inside the home using a drone and was found dead. Jeff Chunn, Morgan County’s coroner, responded to the scene.
Officials said no law enforcement officers fired any shots and all responding officers were safe. Deputies from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Priceville Police Department and Somerville Police Department, responded to the scene so the trooper could safely retreat. The Morgan County SWAT team was also called to the area.
Authorities established a secure perimeter, evacuated nearby homes, and deployed drones as part of the response. Residents were advised to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
