
GEORGIA — Richmond County officials are investigating after a body was found Sunday near railroad tracks along Walton Way.
According to authorities, an unhoused individual was found dead in the area of 13th Street and Walton Way, near the railroad tracks. Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from the Richmond County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene Sunday and remained there as of 5 p.m.
The sheriff’s office said there are no apparent signs of foul play at this time. The individual’s identity has not been released, and the death remains under investigation.
With temperatures expected to drop to 19 degrees or below Sunday night, deputies said they are actively checking areas where unhoused individuals are known to gather.
Authorities are offering transportation to local warming centers and deploying the sheriff’s office Homeless Outreach Team while working with community partners to encourage people to seek shelter during the dangerous cold conditions. Officials noted that while they cannot force individuals to accept shelter, efforts are ongoing to promote safety.
