VIRGINIA — Virginia State Police is urging motorists to stay off the roads again this weekend as troopers continue responding to crashes during the second winter storm of the year.
According to Virginia State Police, troopers have responded to 88 crashes statewide as of 9 a.m. Saturday. Those crashes have resulted in six reported injuries and two deaths. In Central Virginia, police reported 10 crashes, including one injury and one fatality.
Light snow is expected to develop from south to north across Virginia beginning Saturday, Jan. 31. Some areas near the Virginia–North Carolina line could receive between 4 and 8 inches of snow.
While not all of the reported crashes have been confirmed as storm-related, police said icy road conditions left behind from last weekend’s storm continue to make travel hazardous. As crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation work to clear primary, secondary, and subdivision roads, state police are advising drivers to avoid travel on Saturday and Sunday if possible.
For those who must drive, police recommend clearing all ice and snow from vehicles before traveling and allowing snowplows and VDOT trucks adequate space to operate.
During last weekend’s snow and ice storm, Virginia State Police reported 506 crashes on roadways across the commonwealth during and after the event.
