SOUTH CAROLINA — The South Carolina Department of Public Health announced Friday that last weekend’s winter storm has claimed two additional lives, bringing the total number of storm-related deaths in the state to four.

According to the Oconee County Coroner’s Office, one of the newly confirmed deaths involved a 79-year-old man who slipped on leftover ice and fell onto his concrete driveway around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. The coroner said the man was walking to his mailbox at the time of the fall. He was found unresponsive by his wife and was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he later died. The victim’s name has not been released.

DPH also confirmed that a 59-year-old man in Charleston County died from hypothermia on Monday. The county coroner ruled the death storm-related. The man’s name has not been released.

Earlier this week, DPH reported two other storm-related deaths. An 83-year-old woman in Lexington County and a 96-year-old woman in Greenwood County both died from hypothermia.

State health officials continue to urge residents to use caution during extreme cold conditions, particularly as lingering ice and low temperatures remain a hazard in some areas.
